As a follow-up to our Guide to Installing WoW addons, I'm going to talk about some of the more popular addons for World of Warcraft. A new player may question why an addon has to used in the first place, that it disturbs the purity of the game. All I can say is, the purity has already been disturbed, and you should have all the advantages that you can in a competitive world like Azeroth. That being said, realize that the developers of World of Warcraft enabled the ability to create addons for the very purpose of enhancing the player experience. Now let's get on with the list.
Titan Panel -- If any of the addons listed fit the title of this blog, then this one is it. Titan Panel now comes with so many addons itself, that for some classes, this may be all you need. Titan Panel basically provides statistical information for you as your playing, such as XP per hour, honor gained, PvP status, latency, framerate performance, and a lot of other things.
Auctioneer -- This WoW addon is one where I would say, since everyone else has it, you need it. In Azeroth, where there is no local Wal-Mart, some prices are good, some are bad. Auctioneer will help out with this. Once it sees an item such as a stack of iron bars at auction, it takes note of the average price. The more you go to the auction and use the "Scan" button, the more accurate Auctioneer will become at providing market prices for items you are about to sell or about to buy. Enchanters can combine Auctioneer and Enchantrix mod to give you a market price of an item after it is disenchanted.
Scrolling Combat Text -- This may be a personal preference type mod, but it's really informative to see damage being dealt and damage to you without have to watch the combat log. Scrolling combat text shows you the damage above the mob or players head as it happens.
Monkey Quest -- Personally, I have the entire MonkeyMod set, but I wouldn't say that everything in it is something you couldn't live without. A good quest help mod can save you a lot of clicks checking to see if you have gathered all the required items or where to go.
MobHealth -- The number 5 spot could be easily replaced by any number of mods, mostly based on which class you are. This WoW addon is one that I recently downloaded and am beginning to like more and more. MobHealth gives you information about what mob your fighting at the moment. Total health, class, your average dps, and loot information is included. Like many mods here though, information is not already there, it's compiled as you fight. So the more creatures you fight, the better MobHealth will be at letting you know how effective you are against it.
Honorable Mention
Gatherer - Great for gathering professions
Atlas - Instance maps at your disposal
EquipCompare - Compares your current equipment with whatever your mouse is pointing at
Are there more out there, yes, there are hundreds of mods. I've given a list of some of the more popular ones out there. There are others such as BeneCast that can be invaluable to a priest.
On a side note, you may have to up your mod memory when using these addons. I'd recommend 64mb to be safe. Running out of mod memory is not a fun experience, and World of Warcraft will give you a message and completely exit in 20 seconds. With 64mb, I haven't had any problems with memory. You can set this by pressing the addon button at the character screen in World of Warcraft. And remember, make sure to keep your mods updated, because any of these mods could cause you to have random problems in game if they are an older version.
