Insurgency: Modern Infantry Combat

Done with with Portal and Episode 2?  Looking for something to play?  Insurgency: Modern Infantry Combat is a total conversion mod for Half-Life 2 built on the source engine.   According to my research and Steam stats, it is the most popular third-party mod for Half-Life 2 with 213 servers and 5.6 million minutes played per month.  Beta 2 is being released hopefully in the early days of November and a video has been released showing some of what you'll get in this new release.  Here's some notes:

  • New Commander Promotion System*
  • New Weapon: M4A1 Assault Rifle with Front Grip (USMC)
  • New Weapon: AKS74U (Insurgents)
  • New Weapon: Al-Kadesiah Sniper Rifle (Insurgents)
  • New Weapon: SKS Simonov Self-Loading Carbine (Insurgents)
  • New Map: Ins_Samawah
  • New Player Customization and Weapon's Selection Systems
  • New Navigation Indicators**
  • New Overhead Map

*The New Commander Promotion System gives the best player in each team the chance of becoming Commander. He will be able to accept or deny the promotion. If he doesn't accept it, the next best player will get its chance to command its team.

**The New In-game Navigation Indicators will help you a great deal in navigating through the maps, finding objectives and following your commander's orders. You can see the new system in most of the following screenshots.

There have been a lot of new demos that have come out in the past week.  In the storm of confusion about The Orange Box, COD4, and Unreal Tournament 3, you may have missed some great game demos that were released in the past few weeks.

F.E.A.R. Perseus Mandate -- The newest update to the F.E.A.R. series.  This game has a great player experience.

Age of Empires III: The Asian Dynasties -- One of the best real-time strategy games comes out with another expansion.

Enemy Territory: Quake Wars v1.1 -- This demo update brings the ETQW demo up to speed with the game release.

Time Shift -- I've heard great things about this game.  Unlike F.E.A.R. and Max Payne where you slow down time, you can actually stop time in this game to move around.

Heroes of Might & Magic V Tribes of the East -- One of the best turn-based strategy games releases a new expansion.

These are all linked to Filefront, so no registration is necessary to download.

Alien Arena 2007 reviewed

Alien Arena 2007, which is a part of our free multiplayer games list has been reviewed by Linux.com.  Nexuiz, Alien Arena 2007, and Open Arena are the best open-source first-person shooters that you can download as far as I'm concerned.  Linux.com also adds Tremulous, which steps outside of the traditional FPS to me.  Version 6.10 was just released and here are some of the changes:

How does 7 brand new, gorgeous arenas to play in sound?  How about a more balanced and responsive weapon set?  Do you like to 1v1?  Well we now have a duel mode!  The gameplay of Alien Arena was the big focus this release, and you'll see the difference immediately.  Weapons now respawn in five seconds rather than twenty.  A Q3 style health and ammo system has been implemented, to help prevent weapon camping, as well as a random spawning quad.  Last but not least, version 6.10 presents a brand new weapon, the Violator!

Check out the Alien Arena 2007 official site.  Give it some time, it is being slashdotted today.
